    Why We Stopped Trusting Algorithms

In 2026, something happened that had seemed unthinkable just a short time ago: one of the most popular dating apps announced it was doing away with swiping — the very gesture that had defined how we searched for love for nearly a decade. This decision isn’t just a technical update; it’s an acknowledgment that algorithms, designed to make our lives easier, have ultimately made dating more superficial and exhausting. Why have we stopped trusting systems that promised to find us the perfect match? And what’s replacing them?

    The Illusion of Control

When you scroll through profiles, it feels like you’re in control of the process. You choose who to “like” and who to reject. But in reality, the algorithm has already decided for you who to show you. It analyzes your actions, preferences, and time spent in the app, and tailors your feed so that you stay in the app as long as possible. The goal of these apps isn’t to help you find a partner, but to keep your attention. If you were actually finding love, you’d leave — and that’s not profitable. That’s why the algorithms show you not the people who are a perfect match for you, but those who are most likely to keep you on the app for a couple more minutes.

Many users have already realized this conflict of interest. They feel that their emotions and desires are reduced to mathematical models, and this is frustrating. Instead of genuine interaction, they get a stream of profiles that the algorithm deems “compatible”. But what does “compatible” mean to a machine? A set of shared interests, geolocation, and age. But what about chemistry, which can’t be calculated? What about that spark that arises between two people completely by chance? Algorithms can’t predict it because it doesn’t fit into their formulas.

On top of that, when you realize that your choices are actually limited to a few options that the algorithm has decided to show you, a sense of powerlessness sets in. You start to wonder: Am I really making my own choices, or has everything already been decided for me? This undermines your trust not only in the app, but also in the dating process itself. You stop believing that you can find someone on your own because you’re constantly being guided and restricted. And in the end, you’re left with the feeling that you’re just an object in someone else’s coordinate system.

Swiping as a Game, Not a Way to Meet People

When you decide someone’s fate in a fraction of a second, you don’t give yourself a chance to get to know them. You’re judging a picture, not a person. People’s faces flash by, and you just have to swipe — quickly, mechanically, without any real thought. Many describe this process as dehumanizing. An endless stream of faces blends into a homogeneous mass, and you stop seeing them as people. They become mere cards that you can reject or accept, just like in a game.

This mechanic trains us to make superficial judgments. We stop noticing details; we stop giving ourselves time to think. But true intimacy doesn’t come from quick decisions. It requires time, attention, and a willingness to get to know a person, even if they don’t fit the mold. But swiping doesn’t give us that time — it demands an instant response. If you don’t swipe right within three seconds, you’ve already missed your “chance”. This creates the feeling that you’re constantly running late, constantly falling behind.

Furthermore, the game mechanics diminish the importance of each individual. If you reject one person, the next one will appear a second later. And so on, ad infinitum. At some point, you stop taking rejections seriously — and this devalues both yourself and others. You start treating people like disposable commodities that can be endlessly replaced. But when you yourself become the object of that same treatment, it really hurts. It’s a vicious cycle that’s hard to break out of.

Chatki Video Calls: A Return to Real-Life Communication

If algorithms and swiping have turned dating into a game where people are just profiles, what can restore their humanity? One answer is random video chats, such as Chatki. Unlike apps where you’re judged by a photo and a couple of lines of text, a video call on Chatki offers real-time communication without any filters. There are no algorithms here to decide for you who’s a good match. It’s just you and your conversation partner, who appears on the screen at random.

You don’t waste time filling out a profile or choosing the perfect photo. You simply press a button, and a second later, you see a stranger right in front of you. You hear their voice, see their eyes, and sense their mood. This brings back to dating what was lost in the age of algorithms: spontaneity, naturalness, and the ability to sense your conversation partner. During a video call, there’s no room for superficial judgments — you either click or you don’t. And that’s more honest than any algorithm, because you rely on your own feelings, not on machine calculations.

In addition, Chatki video call help you overcome your fear of strangers. After a few video calls, you’ll stop being afraid to start a conversation because you’ll realize that every conversation is just an experience, not a test. You don’t have to be liked by anyone, and you don’t have to be perfect. You’re just chatting, and if the connection doesn’t work out, you move on to the next person without feeling like a failure. And if you feel like you’re stuck in an endless swipe loop and have lost interest in meeting new people, try a 10–15-minute video call. It’s like a warm-up before a workout: you regain the ease and spontaneity that are so essential for genuine communication.

    What’s Replacing Algorithms

Moving away from swiping is just the beginning. More and more people are choosing “intentional dating”: instead of endlessly scrolling, they focus on one or two potential matches and truly invest in them. Instead of relying on algorithms, they look for ways to see the whole person — to hear their voice, understand their values, and feel their energy. This takes more time and effort, but the results turn out to be much more meaningful.

And this brings us back to where it all began: to real-life interaction. To a conversation without intermediaries in the form of complex mathematical formulas. Where you decide for yourself whether you like a person or not, based on what you feel, not on what a machine suggests. Perhaps this is precisely where the future of dating lies — not in smart algorithms, but in simple human connection. We’re learning once again to trust ourselves, our intuition, and our inner voice. And that’s far more valuable than any technological innovation.
